The 2010s saw the rise of many design trends, including Scandinavian minimalism and modern farmhouse. Several design elements, including all-white kitchens, open concept living, and farmhouse sinks, also came to define the decade. While many of these styles and trends will continue on into the next decade, several, including boho design, all-gray interiors, and shiplap, will be left behind in the 2010s, according to a survey conducted by Sherwin-Williams.

Macramé was the least favorite design trend from the past decade for 22% of the 700 interior design professionals surveyed by Sherwin-Williams. Additionally, many designers feel gray is no longer the top neutral color. Nineteen percent of respondents said all-gray interiors were among the worst trends of the decade. While one in ten designers feel all-white interiors are fading, the majority of respondents believe all-white will remain a prevailing trend in the next decade.

One of the biggest design booms of the decade was the popularity of modern farmhouse style. On the back of the overwhelming success of HGTV's "Fixer Upper" and the popularity of Chip and Joanna Gaines, shiplap, exposed beams, barn doors, and farmhouse sinks became some of the most coveted elements for homeowners. While farmhouse style, representing the most-searched home style on Google in 2019, is still popular among fans of the show, professionals expect the popularity of modern farmhouse to wane. Houzz found farmhouse style peaked in popularity in 2018 for both bathroom renovations and kitchen renovations. Nearly 15% of the professionals surveyed by Sherwin-Williams chose shiplap wall treatments as a trend they believe will be left behind in the 2010s.

Designers also indicated tribal prints, concrete countertops and accents, and accent walls are trends they would like to leave behind moving into the 2020s
